The Practical Princess Part I

One of the best things you can do to build your wardrobe is to concentrate on one clothing category- the classics. Those practical pieces that have the versatility to go from trend to trend, day to evening, season to season. As I have said before, if you are shopping under a tight budget, it is always best to fill your closet with classics first, then spend less on trendy statement accessories that will transform your look into the "it" look of season.

One great thing about the classics- you don't have to pay a lot to get a lot. Because every woman in all walks of life wears the classics, you couldn't closely tell a DVF from a Massimo when you've found the right fit. In this series of posts, I will give suggestions of what I think are the ultimate must-haves, where to find them, and how to wear them just right.

The Trouser
A great pair of black or grey pants will do wonders for your wardrobe. Great for work and play, the trouser is a simple way to reach complete sophistication.

Fit: The easiest way to entirely ruin a great pair of trousers is a bad fit. If the trouser is too short, sophistication goes straight out the window; but if too long, the looks turns slightly sloppy. Wear or carry a pair of heels when shopping for this classic item. When you try the trousers on with them, the hem should hit just a tiny bit above the floor. If you are tall (like me), look for a pair that has a cuff at the hem- that way you can take the pair to a tailor and use the extra fabric for lengthening the hemline.  Also, this pant should never be too tight. A great indication of a too-tight  trouser is a well too defined booty, creases that form around the front of the hips, and worst of all, a muffin top (a waistline that squeezes your hips/stomach so much that it creates a sort of bulge around the middle). Don't be afraid to go up a size if necessary, no one but you knows what size you're wearing and you'll feel better and look thinner in a size that fits you appropriately.

The Ensemble: You know you've found the perfect pair of trousers when you put them on, feel great in them, and think to yourself, "Wow, I could wear these with anything!" Blouses, sweaters, cardigans, knits, halters, blazers, etc, etc, etc! For work wear with anything with a sleeve (short, 3/4, wrist or long in length) and for play dress them up by baring a little more skin with a cute halter or one-shoulder top. As long as you look and feel fabulous, anything goes!

Taking on the Trends: A great way to take a a trouser from one trend to the next is by accessorizing with great shoes and belts. With stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Target putting out trendy shoes each season, you are bound to find a fabulous, on-trend pair at a low cost. However, you must consider the type of shoe for the season- bulky wedges and platforms are generally trouser no-no's as they deter the straight line of the pant and over power the look as a whole. Go with a pretty pump or stiletto in the season's hottest hue to lengthen the leg and be on track with the trends. Right now belts of all shapes, sizes, textures and colors are considered in style. My personal favorite is the skinny belt. I think it adds just the right touch of class without looking over-accessorized (another big fashion faux-pas in my book).

Must Buy Now!

'Inspiration gives no warnings" ...waiting impatiently

I must say, despite my ever-evolving love of fashion, I am bored. I have been trying to gather lots of looks to bring in Spring with style, but I can't find the inspiration. Celebrity sightings- dull, fashion mags- underwhelming. I need something new and exciting but don't know where to find it. Here are a few things I'm at least looking forward to:

(1) Tomorrow night I am heading over to SHE Boutique in Lincoln Park to "Celebrate Chicago Style and Those Who Influence It" hosted by powerhouse women in the Chicago fashion scene. Hoping to meet some interesting people and track down some new trends. Always on the lookout!

(2) I am very much hoping that Patricia Field does a hell of a job styling the much anticipated Confessions of a Shopaholic movie, just so I have something new to oogle at. Here are some pics to hold you (me) over. 25 days...

I'm not really loving any of it yet- It's looking a little more fashion fantasy than fashion forward. I need a little Carrie Bradshaw & Co. back in my life.

(3) And, of course, Fashion Week is just around the corner, so hopefully spending hours watching fashion shows on Style.com will do some good...
Oh how I miss NYC and my favorite spot in the entire city, Bryant Park. Love love love.

Now this just really makes my day. I can't believe I'm a day late, but yesterday both Miu Miu and Armani debuted their new ad campaigns featuring my most loved, most watched, most envied living style icons, Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckam. LOVE.

RED CARPET RUN-DOWN

Now that I have had time to let the Golden Globes marinate, I thought I'd publish my opinion about the fashion hits and misses on the red carpet this year. Here I have the good, the bad, the blah and the just god-awful. To begin on a good note, my absolute favorite gown of the evening had to be the beautiful, tiered, black number worn by Evan Rachel Wood. This is my dream Red Carpet moment dress. FLAWLESS!

The Good...

These women gave me a good dose of Red Carpet fashion hits! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Eva Mendes in Dior
Gorgeous! Sleek winter white, an oversized unexpected bow and fabulous accessories- Perfection!

Olivia Wilde in Reem Acra
This Springtime hue really translated well on the red carpet. It was subtle yet surprising and one of my favorites!
______________________________________
Eva Longoria in Reem Acra
Though I am not usually a fan of Eva or the mermaid skirted gown, this sexy style completely stole the show- well done!

The Bad...

No, no, no, no, no! But really, am I all that surprised?

Jennifer Lopez in Marchesa
We've seen this all before. You are a mother of two who hasn't done much of anything in a loong time. Stop trying to dress like Ms. Golden Globe and cover up already!
______________________________________________________
Drew Barrymore in Dior Haute Couture
The dress is pretty, fun, and fanciful. To ruin a Galliano creation with big southern stepford wife hair is just downright wrong. Being in the business forever, Drew should totally know better!
___________________________________________________
Beyonce aka Sasha Fierce in Elie Saab Couture
I don't think this girl even knows the definition of class. A thigh-high slit, loads of cleavage, sparkle sparkle sparkle and a whole lotta bling- where have we seen this before?

The Blah...

You'd think these women- with all their talent, beauty, discretionary income and overall fabulousness- would come up with something a little more exciting than these for the Golden Globes. Just so blah... very disappointing ladies!

Cameron Diaz in Chanel Haute Couture
I know if I was wearing Chanel that was especially made for me,
I'd try to look like I didn't just get out of bed! Preposterous!
_____________________________________________________
Penelope Cruz in Giorgio Armani Prive-
How is it possible for such a sexpot to look so incredibly dull? Booring!
_____________________________________________________

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace-
Sure with that face, hair and bod she looks like a Grecian Goddess...
but for once I'd like to see her try something that isn't black, white or neutral!
______________________________________________

Kate Winslet in Yves St. Laurent-
A little too classic and refined for the Globes, where's the fun?
So happy she won though!

The God-Awful...

Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera
Renee absolutely takes the cake as worst dressed on the red carpet. The hair is reminiscent of a bad 1980s Prom 'do, the sheer top is screaming for undeserved attention and the skirt is a dramatic end to a red carpet tragedy. With all the beautiful gowns in the world you can't help but ask WHY?? Hopefully she will redeem herself at the Oscars... time to hire a new stylist!

Oh Vicky, How Badly I Wish To Be You...

OMFG

In honor of Gossip Girl's return to new episodes tonight, I thought I'd put together a post inspired by my favorite GG girl- Blair Waldorf. Her style is impeccable and her attention to detail, flawless. The little details let us see just how fabulous and luxurious she actually is. From her footwear to her headwear and even her sleepwear always scream high-style. Here are some Blair-worthy pieces at Jenny-affordable prices. XOXO.

Flowers, Flowers Everywhere...

Well Spring sure isn't here yet, but with the holidays behind us it is definitely something new to look forward to! It seems hot Hollywood, however, has already caught a glimpse of Spring fever. Floral gowns and dresses are all over the red carpet these days. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous...
Kerry Washington in Oscar de la Renta
Tadie Newton in Matthew Williamson (my personal fave!)
Kristin Davis in Michael Kors
America Ferrera in Oscar de la Renta

Their inspiration? My guess would be the scene-stealing, trend-making New Yorkers in last May's debut of Sex and the City: The Movie. Yes, your favorite foursome have done it again! F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! Here are a couple of my favorites...

Luckily for the recessionista, there are multiple options that can give you this high-end Hollywood look for a tiny fraction of the cost. Love it!
